LAUNDRY
KEYWORD
RESEARCH
The gap between what an operator calls a service and what a customer types is where most laundry sites lose money. This is that gap, mapped by business type.
An operator writes "wash and fold service". Customers type "someone to do my laundry". Both mean the same transaction; only one of them is a query you can rank for, and only one tells you what the person is feeling when they type it.
Sort by intent before you sort by volume
Volume is the least useful column in a keyword export for a local business, which is the first thing we correct on nearly every audit. A term with 200 searches in your city beats one with 20,000 nationally. Sort by what the searcher intends instead:
- Immediate, near me, open now, same day. Highest value, lowest word count, decided in the map pack.
- Comparison, cost, price per pound, how much. These convert if you answer honestly and lose entirely if you say "contact us".
- Research, how does it work, is it safe for. Slower, but this is what makes the first two rank.
Laundromat
Proximity terms dominate, and payment method is a real differentiator now. Cover both the legacy and the current vocabulary: laundromat near me, coin laundry near me, 24 hour laundromat, laundromat open now, card operated laundromat, laundromat with wifi, large capacity washer near me. Comforters and sleeping bags deserve their own line, people search the item, not the machine. Those terms belong on their own page, marked up with LocalBusiness structured data so the service is machine-readable. See laundromat SEO for how these split across pages.
Dry cleaner
This is the category where the money is in the long tail, because people search the garment rather than the service: wedding dress cleaning, wedding dress preservation, leather jacket cleaning, suede cleaning, curtain cleaning, stain removal, suit cleaning near me, same day dry cleaning. Alterations terms, hemming near me, trouser alterations, bring repeat customers on a cycle nothing else matches. More in the dry cleaner guide.
Wash and fold
Price terms are unusually strong here and unusually poorly served: wash and fold near me, wash and fold price per pound, laundry service cost, drop off laundry near me, same day wash and fold, weekly laundry service, laundry subscription. The content work for this category lives or dies on publishing the number. There is also a cluster of permission-seeking queries, can I pay someone to do my laundry, which convert well and almost nobody writes for. See wash and fold SEO.
Pickup and delivery
Area terms carry this category: laundry pickup and delivery, laundry delivery service near me, same day laundry delivery, laundry pickup [neighborhood], weekly laundry pickup. The neighborhood variants are the ones that produce bookings, and they need real pages per area rather than a list of zip codes, the reasoning is in pickup and delivery SEO.
Commercial laundry
B2B queries are searched by vertical, not by service: hotel linen service, restaurant tablecloth service, medical laundry service, gym towel service, uniform cleaning service, commercial laundry service near me. Add the procurement-stage terms, linen service cost, commercial laundry contract, which the researcher uses months before anyone signs. See commercial laundry SEO.
Mapping keywords to pages
One primary intent per page. If two keywords would need materially different answers, they need different pages; if they would produce the same page, they belong together no matter how different the wording looks.
Do not build a page per keyword variant. Twenty near-identical pages is a pattern Google already discounts, and it is the fastest way to make a small site look spammy. Ten real pages beat forty thin ones every time.
Tools worth using
Search Console first, always, it shows queries you already appear for and lose, which is better data than any estimate. Then Keyword Planner for volume ranges and Trends for seasonality, which is real in this category around holidays and college terms. If you run several stores, check each location separately, demand rarely matches across them.
The highest-value source is not a tool. It is your own phone log and the wording customers use when they call. That is the language to write in, and it is already free. Once the list exists, the SEO guide covers what to do with it, the profile guide covers where the immediate terms actually get used, and our case studies show the outcome. Or ask us for an audit.

/ QUESTIONS
- ARE FREE TOOLS
GOOD ENOUGH? - For a single-location laundry business, yes. Search Console plus Keyword Planner covers what you need. Paid tools earn their cost at multi-location scale or when you are tracking competitors closely.
- HOW MANY KEYWORDS
PER PAGE? - One primary intent, plus the natural variants of it. Chasing several unrelated terms on one page usually means it ranks for none of them.
- LOCAL OR NATIONAL
KEYWORDS? - Usually local, because a laundry business serves a location or pickup radius. National queries can be useful for informational research, but they are rarely the first commercial priority for a local operator. We do not treat engagement metrics as a documented shortcut to local rankings.
- WHAT ABOUT
ZERO-VOLUME TERMS? - Often worth targeting. Keyword Planner reports no data below a threshold, which hides plenty of specific, high-intent queries. Specialty garment terms are the clearest example.
