Working laundromat illustrating the operational foundation of laundry SEO

Most laundry businesses do not have a marketing problem. They have a findability problem, and the two need very different fixes. This guide covers what actually moves search visibility for laundromats, dry cleaners, wash-and-fold services and commercial operators, in the order the work should happen.

Why search decides where people wash

Laundry is bought in a hurry, close to home, on a phone. That combination puts almost all the decision inside Google, the map results, the hours, the reviews, the photos. A customer rarely compares two websites. They compare two listings, pick one, and drive there.

This is different from most local categories. A restaurant gets browsed. A plumber gets called after a recommendation. A laundromat gets searched at nine at night by someone standing over a full basket, and the business that answers the question fastest wins the visit. That is why laundromat SEO lives mostly in the map pack, while commercial linen is decided by pages a procurement researcher reads six months before signing anything.

Keyword research that reflects how people actually type

Start with the queries, not the services. The gap between what a business calls its service and what a customer types is where most laundry sites lose money.

An operator writes "wash and fold service". Customers type "laundry service near me", "how much does wash and fold cost", "someone to do my laundry" and "laundromat that folds for you". Those are four different pages, and the last one is a person asking permission as much as asking for a service.

Group what you find by intent rather than by volume:

  • Immediate, "near me", "open now", "same day". These convert today and belong in your profile and on service pages.
  • Comparison, "cost", "price per pound", "vs". These need honest numbers, not a contact form.
  • Research, "how does wash and fold work", "is dry cleaning safe for". These need articles, and they build the authority that makes the first two rank.

Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends will get you started for free. The better source is Search Console, because it shows the queries you already appear for and lose. Our laundry keyword research guide breaks the lists down by business type.

Google Business Profile is the ranking asset

For most laundry businesses the profile matters more than the website. It decides whether you appear in the three map results that fill a phone screen, and ranking fourth there is the same as not ranking at all.

Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance and prominence. Profile categories, complete information and legitimate reviews contribute to the parts an operator can influence, while distance cannot be optimized away. “Laundromat,” “Dry cleaner,” “Laundry service” and “Linen supplier” describe different businesses; Google’s category guidelines are worth reading before you change anything.

Hours deserve their own mention because they function as a live filter. "Open now" removes anyone whose hours are missing or wrong. A holiday you forgot to set takes you out of results on the day demand peaks. The step-by-step profile guide covers verification, categories, photos and posting, and dry cleaners have their own category considerations.

On-page work: one intent per page

The most common structural fault we find is one page trying to do four jobs. Self-service, wash and fold, pickup and delivery, and commercial accounts are four different customers with four different questions. A single services page ranks poorly for all of them and converts none of them well.

Split them. Give each its own page, its own heading that matches the query, and its own conversion path, a phone number for the urgent one, a scheduler for the delivery one, a quote form for the commercial one. Wash and fold and pickup and delivery are the two most often collapsed together. Then mark them up with LocalBusiness structured data so a machine can read what you do without inferring it.

Speed matters more here than in most categories, because the traffic is almost entirely mobile and often on a weak connection. Check yours with PageSpeed Insights and treat Core Web Vitals as a floor, not a goal. If you are rebuilding anyway, our services page explains what we put in a laundry site.

Citations and consistency

Citations do less than they did ten years ago and more than most people now assume. Their job is no longer to build authority. It is to stop conflicting information from undermining the profile you have carefully built.

Get the name, address and phone number identical everywhere, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, and the aggregators that feed everything else. Then stop. Buying five hundred directory listings is a 2014 tactic that now mostly creates cleanup work.

Reviews, and the ones that actually help

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. The detail inside a review also helps customers judge whether the business fits their need. Do not script service keywords or imply that a phrase guarantees visibility.

Ask neutrally after a completed service and invite honest feedback from eligible customers without screening sentiment. Respond to difficult reviews in a plain voice while protecting order privacy. Google’s Maps user-contributed content policy explains prohibited and restricted content.

Content that earns the commercial rankings

Service pages convert. Articles are what make service pages rank, by giving the site something to be an authority about. For laundry that means answering the questions customers actually ask before they buy: what wash and fold costs, whether dry cleaning damages fabric, how pickup works when nobody is home.

Write for the person, not the algorithm. Google's helpful content guidance is unusually direct about this, and it has teeth now. Thin pages written to hold a keyword are a liability rather than a neutral.

Tracking, or you are guessing

Rankings are not the number. Booked orders are. Between the two sit calls, form fills, scheduler clicks and direction requests, and every one of those can be measured.

Put call tracking on the site and the profile so you know which one produced the phone call. Tag the booking path. Then read cost per booked order rather than traffic, it is the only figure that tells you whether the work is paying, and it is the one we report against on every engagement. You can see what that looks like in our case studies.

The order to do it in

If you do nothing else, do these four things in this sequence:

  1. Claim and complete the Google Business Profile, categories first, hours second.
  2. Split your services onto separate pages with matching headings.
  3. Build a review request into the moment of collection.
  4. Track calls and bookings so the next decision is made on data.

There is no universal ranking timeline. Technical fixes can ship quickly, while search movement depends on the starting site, location, competition, crawl and authority. One reported client engagement moved from 5 to 193 monthly clicks in a month, but that example is not a forecast for another business. Ask for an audit to establish the relevant baseline.

/ QUESTIONS

WHAT IS
LAUNDRY SEO?
The work of making a laundry business appear when someone nearby searches for what it does. In practice that is mostly Google Business Profile, service pages that match real queries, reviews, and the tracking that shows which of it produced orders.
HOW MUCH DOES SEO COST
FOR A LAUNDRY BUSINESS?
It depends on whether the site needs rebuilding. A search foundation on a sound site is a fraction of a full rebuild, and plenty of operators only need the former. Anyone quoting a number before seeing your site and profile is guessing.
HOW LONG BEFORE
IT WORKS?
There is no fixed period. Profile and technical corrections can be implemented quickly, but ranking movement depends on the starting point, competition, location, crawl and authority. Paid search can collect active demand sooner, but does not guarantee orders within a set week.
CAN I DO THIS
MYSELF?
The profile work, yes, and you should, because nobody knows your hours and services better. Page structure, structured data and tracking are where most owners run out of time rather than ability.
